Assess & Track Discipleship with NextSteps

“Yet there is only one thing I can think of more foolish than trying to gauge spiritual growth. And that is: Not trying to gauge it. For that which matters to us is that which we try to keep track of.”

(John Ortberg, pg 3 of Follow Me)

NextSteps is a Game-Changer for Your Church!

The NextSteps Discipleship Assessment and Tracking Sytem is a separate subscription-based program from our Volunteer Mobilization Assessments. It may be used on its own, or it may integrated into our Volunteer -Mobilization Assessments.

NextSteps will help your church leadership to:

  • ASSESS people for their present discipleship phase.
  • TRACK people’s discipleship progress and you church’s global discipleship trends.
  • EQUIP people with real classes, small groups, etc.

This exciting program is built around three top-level phases of spiritual development:

  • Discover
  • Develop
  • Deploy.

Each of these spiritual growth phases contains three sub-phases. The result is nine total phases of spiritual growth. Each one of these 9-phases includes a Custom Equipping Center. Your leadership defines the programs, classes, small groups, and other resources that you believe are best suited for each one of these nine spiritual growth phases. Your specified discipleship recommendations will appear at the bottom of each person’s assessment report, guiding them to take appropriate steps to mature.

Equipping Center categories include:

  1. Articles
  2. Audio Teachings
  3. Bible Study
  4. Book Study

1.) Customize the Question Pool

You may customize every aspect of the NextStep’s question pool so that the program’s questions and titles may better represent your ministry’s unique discipleship culture. It is important that when editing your discipleship questions, the questions be phrased in terms of “life-application” rather than intellectual assent to doctrinal positions. When questions are phrased in terms of life-application, it forces the reader to honestly assess their spiritual journey and consider whether or not their life depicts the behaviors and character described within the question pool. The question pool consists of the following nine discipleship phases, including:

  1. Consideration Phase
  2. Exploration Phase
  3. Decision Phase

DEVELOP

  1. Contrition Phase
  2. Sanctification Phase
  3. Transformation Phase

DEPLOY

2.) Customize the Felt Need Reports

A felt-need is an emotional reponse to life’s experiences. A positive felt-need reponse will result in spiritual growth. A negative emotional response will likely result in spiritual stagantion or even decline. For example: An individual going through a divorce will naturally be struggling with feelings of anger, rejection, fear of intimacy, and betryal. If these emotional struggles are addressed in a positive and appropriate manner, spiritual growth will result. If not, one’s spiritual growth may be hindered.

The question pool reports consists of nine discipleship phases including:

3.) Customize the Spiritual Formation Report

You may customize each spiritual formation Report Summary. This feature is crucial so that the reports reflect your ministry’s unique discipleship culture. This is especially true if your leadership customizes the NextSteps question pool. It is crucial that your version of the NextSteps reports match your question pool modifications.

NextSteps Global Reports

1.) The Global Felt-Need Report

The Global Felt-Need Report provides a clear picture of how many people within your church are presently experiencing each of the 24 felt need categories. These groupings guide your church’s shepherding and counseling ministries in what support groups must be formed.

2.) Global Formation Report

The Global Formation Report reveals how many people within your church have assessed at each of our nine phases of spiritual development. This information helps pastoral leaders to plan their disciple-making program strategies and support staff assignments. Small churches may elect to develop coaching classes for just the DISCOVER, DEVELOP, and DEPLOY categories. Larger churches may elect to develop coaching classes or small groups based upon all nine developmental phases.

3.) Global Progress Reports

Discipleship is a dynamic process. We want our people to consistently mature in their faith, character, and walk with Jesus Christ. Therefore, NextSteps is designed to be retaken over-and-over. As the assessment is retaken, NextSteps tracks everyone’s spiritual growth progress, stagnation, or decline. By default, NextSteps is set to invite your people to retake the assessment every 12 months (from their date of registration). Options include sending auto-email invites every 6 or 18 months.  Individual invitations to retake the assessment may be sent on a per-needed basis. NextSteps can also be setup to invite every church attendee to take the assessments on a specific date. For example, it is common for churches to invite their congregation to retake NextSteps at Fall Kickoff. Then based upon the results, NextSteps automatically guides each person to the proper classes, small groups, etc. that fit their present developmental needs.
