The NextSteps Disciple-Making Assessment & Tracking System by AssessME.org

“Yet there is only one thing I can think of more foolish than trying to gauge spiritual growth. And that is: Not trying to gauge it. For that which matters to us is that which we try to keep track of.”

(John Ortberg, pg 3 of Follow Me)

NextSteps Disciple-Making Equips People to Grow

The NextSteps Discipleship Assessment & Tracking System is a Game-Changer for Your Church!

NextSteps is a separate subscription-based program from our Volunteer Mobilization Assessments. It may be used on its own, or it may integrate into our Volunteer -Mobilization program. NextSteps is a web-based disciple-making solution that will help your leadership to:

  • ASSESS people regularly for their present spiritual formation phase.
  • TRACK people’s discipleship progress, formation-phase graduations, and global discipleship trends for church ministry planning.
  • EQUIP people based upon three broad formation phases: Discover, Develop, and Deploy…with 3 sub-phases each, totaling 9 Phases.

Our disciple-making program is built around three major phases of spiritual development: Discover, Develop, and Deploy. Each phase supports three sub-phases to account for spiritual growth. This results in a total of nine phases of spiritual development. Each of these 9 phases includes a custom equipping center where your church may define the programs, classes, programs, and other resources that your leadership believes are best suited for promoting spiritual maturation at each developmental phase. Based upon how people score within the assessment, the appropriate Strategies will appear at the bottom of their assessment report, empowering them to take practical steps to mature. Equipping categories include:

  1. Articles
  2. Audio Teachings
  3. Bible Study
  4. Book Study
  5. Classes – Complete with user sign-up & auto-email notification to the class facilitator

NextSteps Disciple-Making is Fully Customizable

1.) Edit the Question Pool

NextSteps enables your leadership to customize every aspect of the question pool so that the questions and labels may better represent your ministry’s unique discipleship culture. It is important, however, that when editing your discipleship questions, the questions be phrased in terms of “life-application” rather than intellectual assent to doctrinal positions. When questions are phrased in terms of life-application, it forces the reader to honestly assess their spiritual journey and consider whether or not their life depicts the various spiritual applications listed in your custom question pool. The question pool consists of nine discipleship phases including:

DISCOVER

  1. Consideration Phase
  2. Exploration Phase
  3. Decision Phase

DEVELOP

  1. Contrition Phase
  2. Sanctification Phase
  3. Transformation Phase

DEPLOY

2.) Customize Felt Need Reports

A felt-need is an emotional reponse to life’s experiences. A positive felt-need reponse will result in spiritual growth. A negative emotional response will likely result in spiritual stagantion or even decline. For example: An individual going through a divorce will naturally be struggling with feelings of anger, rejection, fear of intimacy, and betryal. If these emotional struggles are addressed in a positive and appropriate manner, spiritual growth will result. If not, one’s spiritual health may be harmed.

3.) Customize Spiritual Formation Summaries

Your leadership may customize each spiritual formation report summary. This feature is crucial so that the reports reflect your ministry’s unique discipleship culture. This is especially true if your leadership customizes the NextSteps question pool. It is crucial that your version of the NextSteps reports match your question pool modifications.

NextSteps Disciple-Making Generates Global Reports

1.) Global Felt-Need Reporting

The global felt-need report is very useful to pastoral leaders as it provides a clear picture of how many people within their church are presently experiencing each of the 24 felt need categories. These groupings guide your church’s shepherding and counseling ministries in what support groups must be formed, and what kind of support group leaders will be required. Remember, felt-needs may be positive motivations inspiring people to grow spiritually, or negative impedaments to people’s discipleship progress. People experiencing negative felt-needs will require pastoral care support.

2.) Global Formation Report

The global formation report depicts how many people within your church have assessed at one of our nine phases of spiritual development. This information helps pastoral leaders to plan their disciple-making program strategies and support staff assignments. Small churches may elect to develop coaching classes for just the DISCOVER, DEVELOP, and DEPLOY categories. Larger churches may elect to develop coaching classes or small groups based upon all nine developmental phases.

3.) Global Progress Reports

Discipleship is a very dynamic process. Ideally, we want to see people mature in their faith, character, and walk with Jesus Christ. This is why NextSteps is designed to be retaken over-and-over. As the assessment is retaken, NextSteps tracks each indivdiual’s progress. By default, NextSteps is set to automatically email an invitation to your people to retake the assessment every 12 months. Options include 6 months, 18 months, or manual invitations to retake the assessment on a per-needed basis. Your church leaders can all determin if your people should retake the assessments based upon their registration date, or based upon a corporate date to align with your church’s programming goals. For example, it is very common for churches to call upon their entire congregation to retake NextSteps in the second week of September. Then based upon the results, NextSteps automatically guides each person to the proper classes, small groups, etc. that fit their present developmental needs.

Not everyone continually matures in their faith. At times people stagnate in their walk with the Lord. And at times, some people even backslide. NextSteps progress reports also track spiritual stagnancy and spiritual decline.
